Access

Internal users

For users that have not paid the annual subscription charge, a charge (per block of time) is made for use of the instruments. Booking of the equipment by the users is done via an electronic booking system which requires a university Raven account. Users may only book time if they have been registered with the Facility and received the proper training.

External users

External users (academic or industrial) are welcome to apply for access.  In this case, please contact the facility manager (Dr Dima Chirgadze, dyc21 at cam.ac.uk) to discuss your requirements. Terms and conditions apply.

Assisted runs, training and consultations

Please note that equipment assisted runs, equipment training and consultations can only be performed on the following days:

Monday (9am – 5pm)
Tuesday (9am – 5pm)
Friday (9am – 1pm)

Please do not book the Facility’s equipment for training purposes outside of these hours (contact Dr Dima Chirgadze, dyc21 at cam.ac.uk, for more information).

Authorship and acknowledgements

We follow the Association of Biomolecular Resource Facilities guidelines.  Facility staff must get proper credit where they have made substantive contributions to a project, or where experiments and/or analysis are of a non-routine nature.

Please note that when writing publications and/or reports (such as part II and part III dissertations, first year PhD reports, theses, etc) you must acknowledge any use of the  the structural biology facilities (X-ray, NMR, Biophysics) and individuals running the facilities, as appropriate. Below are suggested wordings for this, feel free to adapt them to match particular projects.

Generic Structural Biology:
“These experiments were performed in the Structural Biology facility at the Department of Biochemistry, University of Cambridge. We are grateful to the Facility Managers, Drs Dimitri Chirgadze, Daniel Nietlispach and Katherine Stott, for their assistance in using these facilities”

NMR specific:
“These experiments were performed in the NMR facility at the Department of Biochemistry, University of Cambridge. We are grateful to the Facility Managers, Drs Daniel Nietlispach and Katherine Stott, for their assistance in using these facilities”

Crystallography:
“These experiments were performed in the Crystallographic X-ray facility at the Department of Biochemistry, University of Cambridge. We are grateful to the Facility Manager, Dr Dimitri Chirgadze, for his assistance in using these facilities”

Biophysics:
“These experiments were performed in the Biophysics facility at the Department of Biochemistry, University of Cambridge. We are grateful to the Facility Manager, Dr Katherine Stott, for her assistance in using these facilities”

Open access policy

The Wellcome Trust now requires that all publications resulting from use of Wellcome funds is open access.

Affiliated instruments in Structural Biology include NMR spectrometers and various Biophysics instruments; these are located elsewhere in the Sanger building.
